๙๙๘ การเจิมคนป่วยประกอบขึ้นโดยการเจิมด้วยน้ำมัน และกล่าววาจาที่กำหนดไว้ในหนังสือพิธีกรรม ด้วยการเจิมนี้ พระศาสนจักรมอบคริสตชนที่ป่วยหนักน่าอันตรายแด่พระเจ้า ผู้รับทนทรมานและรับเกียรติมงคล เพื่อขอพระองค์ช่วยบรรเทา และช่วยให้รอด
